We caught a thief at the shoe store today. It was a matter of internal theft. We had been investigating missing inventory the past week. We had collected evidence and interviewed staff. It all pointed towards one employee. Prior to discovery of her crime, in my mind she was a model employee. She had what seemed to be a lot going for her... studying at UBC, happy family and seemed to get along well with others.
We caught her with one pair and after much prodding confessed to stealing more merchandise. During the interrogation she had the nerve to blame other staff and was clearly making up her excuses as she went along. It was sad to see such a smart girl humiliate herself with endless excuses. She even gave a poor performance crying. When it was clear we weren't swayed, the tears turned off like a facet.
When she did fully admit to the thefts she claimed that it was because her mom had health problems. If I was her mom, I couldn't think of more devastating or embarrassing news than finding out that my oldest child is a criminal. If she was lying to get sympathy for her crime, I hope karma doesn't swing around and actually make her mom sick.
The conclusion is pretty sad. I felt that she wasn't sorry but more upset that she was caught. This I'm afraid is her greatest flaw. I believe with this sad attitude that she'll steal again. I hope she proves me wrong and finds her way to a happy and successful life.
